Our programme: empowerment and rehabilitation
The Wāhine Rising Empowerment and Rehabilitation Programme is designed specifically for women in the newly established Waikeria Prison section. We offer a holistic approach to support their journey, both inside and out.
Trauma-informed healing
We provide group and joint sessions addressing past trauma, mental health, and emotional wellbeing, fostering healing and resilience.
Whānau & parenting support
We work to maintain and strengthen family relationships, including dedicated support for mothers and children where possible.
Our commitment to cultural responsiveness
Wāhine Rising delivers Māori-led programmes and cultural activities to ensure participants’ identities and values are respected and reinforced, fostering a strong sense of belonging and cultural pride.
Transition planning for a successful future
We assist women in creating realistic and comprehensive post-release plans covering crucial aspects like mental health support.
Support both inside and outside the walls
What truly makes Wāhine Rising unique is our unwavering commitment to providing continuous support — both during incarceration and crucially, as women step out and reintegrate into society.
